Strengthening Student Competence through Hands-On Experience in Healthcare and the Application of Modern Medical Technology

UNPRI, Medan – Prima Vision Eye Hospital (RS Mata Prima Vision) is once again demonstrating its commitment to supporting the development of human resources in the field of public health. The specialist eye hospital is entrusted as the location for the Field Study Practice (PBL) I for students of the Public Health Study Program at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI), marking a synergy between a higher education institution and a specialist-based healthcare service.

This activity is an important moment for students to directly understand how public health principles are applied in the management of a specialist hospital, which has unique operational characteristics and challenges compared to a general hospital.

The handover of the students took place in the main meeting room of Prima Vision Eye Hospital, attended by the hospital management, field supervisors, and advising lecturers from UNPRI. In his address, the Director of Prima Vision Eye Hospital emphasized that the hospital is not only a place for service but also a dynamic learning space.

“Through this PBL, we want students to understand that managing a specialist hospital like ours requires an approach that is precise, efficient, and oriented towards very high service quality,” he stated.

Students are expected to observe and contribute to strategic processes such as patient flow management, the specific eye triage system, and the integration of technology in diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Field Curriculum: Delving into Specialist Hospital Management Systems

For eight weeks, students will undergo a program designed to hone their analytical and implementation skills. Some of the main focuses of the activities include:

• Eye Service System Audit: Students will study the service flow from registration to medical procedures, including queue management and internal referral systems.
• Clinical and Operational Data Analysis: They will be involved in processing patient data, case trends, and the efficiency of using diagnostic tools such as the slit lamp and OCT.
• Visual Health Promotion: Students will design educational campaigns about the prevention of visual impairment, using an interactive approach with patients and families.
• Preventive Program Evaluation: Assessment of the effectiveness of the hospital's eye screening programs and public education is an important part of the learning.

Prima Vision Eye Hospital as a Health Management Laboratory

The UNPRI advising lecturer referred to Prima Vision Eye Hospital as an ideal “specialist health management laboratory” for students. The structured work environment, the use of high technology, and the focus on evidence-based medicine services provide a rich and relevant experience.

“Students will learn how a specialist hospital is managed with a systematic approach, from Human Resources management and quality control to risk communication strategies with patients,” the lecturer said.

Real Contribution to Service Improvement

At the end of the program, students will present their observation and analysis results to the hospital management. The recommendations generated are expected to provide strategic input for improving the efficiency and service quality of Prima Vision Eye Hospital.
