UNPRI Launches Internal Medicine Specialist Program, Strengthening Its Position as a Leading Medical University in Sumatra
Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) officially opened the Internal Medicine Specialist Education Program to meet the need for qualified medical personnel in Indonesia, while strengthening its reputation as a leading private medical campus in Sumatra.
UNPRI, Medan - Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) has again achieved significant success by officially launching the Internal Medicine Specialist Education Program (PPDS) based on Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 753/B/O/2025. With this program, UNPRI becomes the first private university (PTS) in North Sumatra to offer internal medicine specialist education, strengthening its position as the leading medical university in North Sumatra and even on the island of Sumatra.
The PPDS Internal Medicine Program is a continuing education program for general practitioners who wish to study internal medicine more comprehensively. An internist plays a crucial role in diagnosing, treating, and managing various illnesses in adults, from metabolic and cardiovascular disorders to infectious diseases. With this program, UNPRI addresses the needs of the public and the healthcare sector for a growing number of qualified internal medicine specialists. The presence of this PPDS program also aligns with the government's target of private universities to address the shortage of specialist medical personnel in Indonesia, including internal medicine specialists, whose distribution has been uneven.
One of the main advantages of participating in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UNPRI is its curriculum, which is designed to align with global medical developments and integrated clinical practice at a leading teaching hospital. Students are equipped not only with clinical skills but also with analytical, research, and complex problem-solving skills in the healthcare sector. Generally, participants in the Internal Medicine Residency Program will study a variety of disciplines, from cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology, to hematology and oncology. To date, UNPRI has seven specialist medical education programs (PPDS), including: Primary Care Family Medicine Specialist, Radiology Specialist, Ophthalmology Specialist, Cardiology Specialist, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist (Obgyn), Anesthesia and Intensive Care Specialist, and now Internal Medicine Specialist (Internist). With this number, UNPRI is recorded as the private university with the most PPDS in Indonesia. It is also the only private university with its own main teaching hospital, which serves as a clinical laboratory and practice for specialist medical students, who can also earn a double master's degree according to their interests.
The existence of this program is under the leadership of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences, UNPRI, Prof. Dr. dr. H. Gusbakti Rusip, M.Sc., Sp.KKLP(K)., PKK., AIFM., AIFO-K. He emphasized that the presence of the PPDS Internal Medicine at UNPRI will strengthen the capacity of medical education services in North Sumatra.
