UNPRI Holds Public Lecture Highlighting AI & IoT Impacts on the World of Work

Rapid changes in the world of work due to technological advances were the main focus of a Public Lecture held by Universitas Prima Indonesia with the theme "Reset the World of Work: AI & IoT Shake Things Up, New Skills Determine," Monday (July 21, 2025) held in the main hall of the UNPRI Campus on Jalan Sampul No. 3 Medan.

The event featured keynote speaker Dr. Arjon Turnip, Head of the Center for Mechatronics, Energy, and Biomedicine Studies at Padjadjaran University, who discussed in depth the impact of adopting technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics, and Cloud Computing in various sectors, particularly in 2025.

According to Dr. Arjon, the agricultural sector will be increasingly supported by smart technology through the integration of AI and large-scale data to realize a smart agriculture system.

In his presentation, Dr. Arjon explained that AI works through three main components: data, algorithms, and computing. The massive growth of data, from both the commercial and scientific sectors, opens up enormous potential in analytics.

The new philosophy in the digital age is to collect as much and as broadly as possible data, as it can be valuable for both planned and unforeseen purposes. He also reviewed the evolution of AI, from the era of simple rules in the 1950s, to the emergence of data science and machine learning in the early 2000s, to the birth of generative AI such as ChatGPT, DALL·E, and Sora, which can generate text, images, video, and sound.

Generative AI, he argued, is not just a magical tool, but a revolutionary force with the potential to replace human jobs. Therefore, he emphasized that the key to facing this change is adapting skills, particularly creativity, emotional intelligence, and analytical reasoning.

Dr. Arjon also demonstrated how AI is now being used in various sectors. In healthcare, AI helps through medical chatbots, automated patient scheduling, and even detecting medication dosage errors.

In the manufacturing sector, this technology plays a role in predicting equipment failures, quality control, and warehouse automation. In smart transportation, AI is used for traffic management and autonomous vehicles. Meanwhile, the world of education is also undergoing a transformation through personalized learning, virtual teachers, and adaptive curriculum systems.

Smart cities are also taking shape with AI systems that manage traffic, energy, and waste more efficiently. Dr. Arjon detailed five key trends predicted to dominate 2025: manufacturing automation, intelligent mobility, healthcare transformation, smart cities, and Big Data-based business analytics.

During the session, Dr. Arjon also shared a variety of innovative research from the laboratory he leads. His research includes a smart holter system for early detection of heart problems, an interactive medical robot for isolated patients, brain activity detection for drug detection, and brain signal technology for wheelchair control and fear detection in aspiring pilots.

In agriculture, his research has resulted in a smart drone with a Deep Neural Network-based adaptive obstacle avoidance and spraying system, as well as a smart halter system for cattle health monitoring.

This system enables real-time monitoring of body temperature, heart rate, behavior, and food and water consumption, thereby increasing livestock productivity and reducing deaths due to delayed medical treatment.

Furthermore, his research includes smart-grid-based renewable energy systems, intelligent automotive controls, and a cascade buffer tank water pump system for water-stressed highland areas.

Closing the public lecture, Dr. Arjon stated that AI has and will continue to drastically change the world. This challenge must be met with individual readiness for transformation. He encouraged students to become tech-savvy graduates, able to adapt to change, develop new skills, and actively build collaborations. "The future belongs to those who are ready to transform with technology," he concluded.
