THE ROLE OF ACADEMIC CIVITY IN PREPARING HUMAN RESOURCES TO REALIZE MEDAN CITY INTO A SMART CITY

BACKGROUND

Smart City is a concept of an intelligent city that can help the people in it, by managing existing resources effectively and efficiently to improve the quality of life of people living in the city. For example, by providing the right information to the community/institutions in carrying out their activities, so that the information can be used properly to facilitate their lives. Currently, several cities in Indonesia have also adopted the concept of smart cities and Surabaya was selected as the smartest city in Indonesia by Warta Indonesia Magazine and Warta eGov in 2011.

In the process, the indicators used as benchmarks for achieving a smart city are: smart living, environment, utility (utility / infrastructure), economy, mobility, people (humans / society). These six smart city concepts can be developed based on the criteria and characteristics of the needs of urban residents, which are not the same between one city and another.

Medan City is one of the three largest cities in Indonesia, it should be able to realize Medan City as a smart city seen from the development of urban planning, and the needs of the community today. However, to realize Medan City as one of the cities that implements the smart city concept like big cities in Indonesia, there are several stakeholders who need to be involved in developing the smart city concept, namely Government, Academician, Citizen / civil community, Developers, Media, and Private sectors ....

Each stakeholder has their own role in implementing the smart city concept to the action level. For example, the government needs to create policies that support the creation of an integrated smart city ecosystem. Academics provide policy suggestions based on research and studies conducted and prepare human resources who are ready and skilled as users and users of technology. Developers create applications that utilize technology. The media promotes and socializes all programs. The private sector supports with capital, and communities and society participate by changing bad old habits and practicing new ones. If one party does not contribute, then this concept will not work well.

One of the efforts made by Universitas Prima Indonesia in its role as a producer of graduate students who can play an active role in realizing Medan City into a Smart City is by holding a National Seminar "The Role of the Academic Community in Preparing Human Resources to Realize Medan City into a Smart City" which is certainly very much needed. This seminar is expected to be able to serve as a common foothold in examining the extent to which the concept of a smart city can be (part of) a solution to overcome urban problems in Indonesia, as well as what human resource preparations must be prepared starting from cultural background (cyber culture) to conceptual studies, methods, and implementations related to smart cities based on Information and Telecommunication Technology will be discussed in this seminar.

OBJECTIVES

• Introducing the concept of a smart city and the role of each stakeholder;
• Providing students with an understanding of the challenges of future technological developments;
• Introducing the application of information technology in building a smart city.
