Defeating the Coldness of the Screen:

How UNPRI’s Faculty of Psychology Revives Face-to-Face Communication in the Digital Era

Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) continues to lead the way in addressing the profound psychological challenges of the digital age. Through a compelling webinar held on January 22, 2026, the Faculty of Psychology explored how digital natives—particularly Gen Z and Gen Alpha—can navigate the growing "empathy gap" caused by an over-reliance on virtual interactions. The event highlighted that while technology connects us to thousands of individuals globally, it often lacks the biological warmth and sensory data found only in face-to-face communication.

Keynote speaker Haposan Lumbantoruan, S.Pd., M.Psi., emphasized that empathy in the virtual world is no longer an automatic response; rather, it has become a skill that requires conscious effort and consistent practice. He explained that the human brain evolved over millennia to read subtle body language and vocal tones. When we communicate through screens, we lose nearly 90% of these non-verbal cues, forcing the brain’s Prefrontal Cortex to overcompensate. This cognitive load is a primary driver of digital fatigue, a common issue among younger generations who spend significant time in asynchronous digital spaces.

Furthermore, the discussion touched upon the paradox of "biological loneliness." Despite having vast social networks, the lack of physical presence means the body produces less oxytocin—the "bonding hormone"—compared to real-world interactions. This creates a state where the brain feels isolated despite being hyper-connected. As the best Faculty of Psychology in the region, UNPRI is dedicated to adapting its academic focus to these modern realities. By integrating SDGs 4 and SDGs 17, the faculty ensures its students are equipped to lead with emotional intelligence and resilience.
