UNPRI Students Create Briquette and Clean Water Filtration Innovations to Empower Coastal Fishermen in Serdang Bedagai

Through the 2025 Community Impact Student Program, Universitas Prima Indonesia students design alternative energy solutions and clean water technology to enhance the independence and quality of life of coastal communities in Pantai Cermin.

UNPRI Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacist Students Qualify for Impact Program: Transforming Coastal Waste into Briquettes and Clean Water Filtration

Students of Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) Medan have once again shown a real contribution to coastal communities through an innovation that successfully passed the 2025 Impactful Student Program (Program Mahasiswa Berdampak). This innovation was developed by students from the Bachelor of Clinical Pharmacy Study Program and the Pharmacist Professional Study Program at UNPRI, which are known as the Best Private Study Programs in Medan, thereby increasingly recognizing the quality of their research and innovation.

The project, titled “Innovation of Organic Waste Briquettes and Water Filtration for the Empowerment of Fishermen in Pantai Cermin Kiri Village,” is presented as a solution to the need for alternative fuel and access to clean water for the fishing community.

The activity was attended by apt. Hariyadi Dharmawan Syahputra, M.Farm., and dr. Haryadi, Sp.J.P., (K) as advising lecturers, along with the student team participating in the Impactful Student Program.

The team leader explained that this innovation emerged from the observation of large amounts of unused organic household waste and seafood waste. “Fishermen in Pantai Cermin Kiri still face limitations in fuel and access to clean water. We then processed the organic waste into environmentally friendly briquettes and designed a simple water filtration system using activated charcoal, sand, and zeolite,” he said.

These organic briquettes are made from coconut shells, rice husks, and dry leaves, producing stable and eco-friendly heat. The developed water filtration system is also capable of filtering brackish water to become more suitable for daily use by the coastal community.

The advising lecturers expressed high appreciation. “This innovation is not only scientifically relevant but also provides great social value. The students were able to integrate appropriate technology with a concern for the welfare of the fishing community,” said apt. Hariyadi.

Universitas Prima Indonesia provides full support, both in academic mentoring and field testing facilities. The success of students from the Best Private Bachelor of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacist Professional Study Programs in Medan is expected to inspire other students to continue producing work that impacts society.

Through this program, students hope to help increase the energy independence of fishermen and strengthen access to clean water. “We want to bring real change to the community. Small innovations can bring a big impact,” said one of the team members.
