UNPRI, Medan — The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) once again demonstrated its commitment to developing competence and literacy through lecturers’ active participation in external educational activities. On Saturday, 1 November 2025, Muhammad Tommy Lumban Tobing, S.S., M.Pd., an FKIP UNPRI lecturer, served as a speaker at the Basic Journalism Training (PJTD) organized by the Creative Student Press of Universitas Negeri Medan (Unimed). The event took place at the Secretariat of Unimed’s Creative Student Press and was attended by new student-press crew candidates (CKB).

As a speaker, Tommy delivered a session on “Articles and Opinions,” sharing his knowledge and hands-on experience in journalism. In his remarks, Tommy said, “I am honored to be a speaker at this PJTD. With the experience I have, I hope it can equip them to discover their talents—both in writing scientific works and in growing to become educators or practitioners in the future. I also hope this event can be the start of good collaboration between Unimed’s Creative Student Press and UNPRI’s FKIP going forward.”

Tommy’s presence was not only a conduit for knowledge transfer but also a source of motivation for PJTD participants. The new crew candidates had the opportunity to practice writing directly, understand the structure of articles and opinion pieces, and sharpen their critical thinking skills. The interaction between the speaker and participants was engaging, creating an inspiring learning atmosphere that supported students’ creativity.

Rahma Hidayati, Editor-in-Chief of Unimed’s Creative Student Press, also expressed her appreciation. “This activity was specially designed to provide new knowledge to the CKB of Creative Student Press. With Mr. Tommy’s presence, we hope the CKB will be motivated to continuously improve their learning capacity and, perhaps, follow Mr. Tommy’s footsteps to become lecturers or journalists. We also hope the collaboration between FKIP UNPRI and Creative Student Press will continue to develop for the better,” Rahma said.

The Dean of FKIP UNPRI, Dr. Dian Syafitri, S.S., M.Hum., emphasized that lecturers’ participation in academic and non-academic activities outside campus is part of the faculty’s strategy to broaden networks, enhance educational quality, and encourage high-achieving students. “We fully support the involvement of FKIP lecturers in sharing knowledge and experience, especially in literacy and journalism at local, national, and even international levels, because it will inspire students and broaden their horizons,” she stated.

Activities related to literacy enhancement also strengthen inter-university relations and demonstrate FKIP UNPRI’s capacity to bridge cross-institutional collaboration. Lecturers’ active participation in trainings such as PJTD further solidifies UNPRI’s position as an excellent socio-technopreneurship campus that not only focuses on classroom learning but also promotes the development of students’ soft skills and literacy beyond campus—creating positive impact on society and preparing them for the professional world ahead.
